PRE-OPERATIVE CARE

Do not have anything to eat or drink after midnight prior to your procedure.
Some procedures require a bowel prep. This may include drinking phospho-soda or using an enema, this will be reviewed in the office.
Please hold anti-inflammatories (Motrin, Ibuprofen, Celebrex) at least 5 days prior to surgery.
Please hold coumadin/warfarin, Plavix, Vitamin E supplements at least 5 days prior to surgery.
Please hold Aspirin at least 5 days prior to surgery.
Please hold Plavix at least 5 days prior to surgery.
The hospital will tell you what time to arrive for your surgery.

POST-OPERATIVE CARE

The following post-operative care procedures are listed for reference, please contact your physician with any concerns.

     
 
Brachytherapy (seeds)
Please contact your physician.
Circumcision

Drink plenty of fluids
No tub baths 7 - 10 days
Apply Neosporin Ointment to bandage, dressing can be removed according to doctors orders.
Restricted activity, no heavy lifting for 2 weeks

Cystectomy (open)

No lifting of heavy objects for 6 weeks
Best to eat small but frequent meals for 14 days

Cystocele
The catheter and vaginal packing is left in overnight. Follow directions on removing the gauze and catheter.
Rest for 48 hours
Avoid work for 1 - 2 weeks
Avoid constipation
No heavy lifting for 2 - 4 weeks
No tub baths, pools or sex for 6 weeks
Vaginal discharge is common for 1 - 2 weeks
ESWL (Shock Wave Lithotrispy)
Blood in the urine is common for 24 - 48 hours
Drink plenty of fluids
Green Light Laser TURP
The catheter is usually left in over night
Blood in the urine for about 2 weeks is common.
Burning, a feeling of urgency and frequency is common for 2 - 8 weeks
Hydrocele / Vasectomy
Bruising, swelling and aching is common for 48 hours
Use ice for 48 hours
No shower for 48 hours
If non strenuous, you may resume work after 48 hours
Hypospadius Repair
Drink plenty of fluids
No tub baths 7 - 10 days
Apply Neosporin Ointment to bandage, dressing can be removed according to doctors orders.
Restricted activity, no heavy lifting for 2 weeks
Inguinal Hernia Repair
No tub baths for 2 weeks
No heavy lifting for 2 - 4 weeks
Restricted activity 2 - 4 weeks
Meatoplasty
No tub baths for 1 - 2 weeks
May have burning and stinging upon urination 1 - 7 days
Nephrectomy (open radical)
Staples may be removed in 7 - 10 days
Do not scrub incision
No lifting of heavy objects for 6 weeks
Avoid constipation for 6 weeks
Best to eat small but frequent meals for 14 days
Nephrectomy (laparoscopic)
No lifting of heavy objects for 6 weeks
Best to eat small but frequent meals for 14 days
Orchiopexy
You will have a button sewn to the outside of scrotum, do not remove.
Restricted activity for 2 weeks.
Prostate Biopsy (template)
Blood in urine 2 - 3 weeks
Urination urgency and frequency 2 - 3 weeks
May have trouble starting urination
Prostatectomy (open radical)
Staples may be removed in 7 - 10 days
Do not scrub incision
The Catheter may be removed in 2 weeks
No exercise for 6 weeks
Avoid heavy lifting for 6 weeks
Avoid constipation for 6 weeks
You may attempt or resume sexual activity at 6 weeks
Ask your doctor when he would like for your next PSA to be drawn
Perform Kegel (http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/kegel-exercises/WO00119) muscle exercises as soon and as often as possible after your catheter has been removed.
Prostatectomy (robotic)
Do not scrub incision
Avoid heavy lifting for 4 weeks
The catheter is removed in 1 - 2 weeks
You may attempt or resume sexual activity at 4 weeks

Sling (transobturator)
Couch rest for 48 hours
It is okay to go back to work after 48 hours if non strenuous
No heavy lifting or exercising for 2 weeks
No tub bath, sex for 6 weeks
Vaginal discharge is common for 1 - 2 weeks
Avoid constipation
Sling (retropubic)
Couch rest for 48 hours
It is okay to go back to work after 48 hours if non strenuous

TURBT (bladder resection)
The catheter is usually left in overnight Blood in the urine for about 2 weeks is common.
Burning, a feeling of urgency and frequency is common for 2 - 8 weeks
Ureteroscopy
Blood in the urine as well as burning is common for up to 7 days
Drink plenty of fluids
Do not pull the stent string until you are instructed to do so.
